Form 2290 For 2012 / 2013 Tax Year

The filing period of Form 2290 for the 2012 / 2013 tax year officially opened on July 1st this year, but that doesn’t mean all is back to normal. 2290Tax learned about an upcoming IRS computer shut down that means truckers need to file their 2012 tax forms no later than August 30th.

Returns submitted on Friday August 31st and beyond will not be received by the IRS until some time in September 2012 and will be LATE.

IRS e-file Computer Shut Down Announcement for 2012

A senior manager at the IRS announced a:

shut down of the 2012 / 2013 2290 e-file system commencing at noon on August 31, 2012 and continuing through the Labor Day week-end. This will have a serious impact on all last minute filers of Form 2290 for the 2012 tax year. Normally, this form is considered filed on time up to the end of the day August 31st.

This year, any returns not filed – and accepted – prior to noon on August 31st will not be processed until sometime later in September when the e-filing system is re-opened. In order to avoid late filing penalties and interest, be sure to submit your Form 2290 for 2012 / 2013 well in advance of the IRS shut-down.

How Does This Impact You?

A Scheduled Outage means that the IRS will shut down the entire e-file system and will not be able to receive ANY returns until they reopen. If you e-file at 12:01 eastern time on August 31, your return will get to the IRS after the Form 2290 2012 / 2013 due date. And by the sounds of this notice, your return will be considered late.

How Can You Ensure That YOUR Form 2290 For 2012 is on Time?

The only way to ensure that you’re not assessed late fees and penalties is to file before the August 31st deadline. The IRS must receive BOTH your form AND your tax dollars before the deadline in order to prevent any late fees.

To prevent any confusion, be sure you file your 2012 2290 Tax Form no later then Thursday August 30th.
